Dear readers,
I came across an advert in a newspaper aimed at Filipino Nannies and it offered a full-time job in Manhattan caring for a newborn, plus cleaning for $10 an hour. The advert was well-written and probably well-intentioned however I was struck at how low Nannies from the Filipinos are routinely paid. 
Having been in the ‘Nanny’ business for a few years I have noticed a salary and expectation of duties difference. Why are some Nannies paid less for the work they do? Some employers argue that  considering the enormous exchange rates of the US dollar to the Filipino dollar – the Nannies themselves don’t notice and even feel ‘lucky’ to be here/working. 
Yet those same Nannies not only have to support families back home on a slave wage, they also have to live somewhere in the City.
I decided to explore how Filipino women themselves felt about the US labor childcare market. Not surprisingly I came across some strong opinions.

The fact is that most employers of filipino nannies are caucasian because  they are the most preferable nannies, have become the most common, and help de-stress the madam.  The reason whites love the filipinas so much is because they have the idea that. “Filipino women…are happy to be a domestic for the rest of their lives” (Bakan 313).  In the Philippines, the point of a women’s existnace is to take care of the children.  Her job requires her to be domestic.  Because of this, filipino women have gained a docile reputation.  They, “ are extremely respectful…of authority…[more] professional in a sense” (Bakan 322).  Respect for authority also takes worries out of a couples mind that anything will be stolen.  As terrible as it sounds, people are still racist, and assume that a latina or black nanny will run off with all their possessions.  Filipinas are docile creatures who have, “inferior intellects and educations relative to European nannies” (Pratt 229) making them easier to exploit.

Being a nanny is more stressful than you think.  You have to take care of everything a child needs, clean the house the child lives in, cook the meals for families who hate you, receive below minimum wage for a 16 hour day on top of worrying about your own kids.  The job can really bog one down.  So much goes through their mind as a promise of a wealthier America is not theirs to share in.  In combination with theconditions, lack of way path to their ultimate goal, and being away from their children, life as a nanny is psychologically damaging.
               

In addition to all the stress associated with being a nanny, she has to worry about the fact that, “ the likelihood that a migrant woman’s husband will have affairs is considered even higher than that for a migrant wife” (Lan 193).  When the man feels insecure and lonely, he will go out and find someone to invade his perseonal space fi you know what I mean.  The fact that he cannot control his libido only adds to her pain as she still lovingly sends her family money, knowing or unknowing of the other woman.

Isn’t it time for US employers to treat their Nannies – whatever their national origin – equally and fairly? Can people honestly continue to drink fair trade coffee shop at Wholefoods, recycle their garbage but continue to treat other people as second class citizens? Guess what hipsters – not cool.
