Wednesday Opinion: Food = Mood
Our kids are what they eat. No amount of anger management classes or anti-depressants can resolve a child’s mental challenges if that child is eating junk.
Trick or Treat?
“My kids only eat M* D’s once a week, it’s a family treat.”
Would you inject your kids with poison once a week? I know I know it’s not quite the same but most fast/junk food is actually toxic to the human body. Take a look at a typical fast food order where the ingredients are broken down.
Kid 1: = Chicken nuggets, fries, vanilla milkshake
Kid 2: = Cheese burger, fries, strawberry milkshake
Adult: = Cheese burger, Super large fries, Super large Cola
Adult = Quarter pound burger, Super large fries, Super large Cola
Chicken Nuggets = reconstituted, pressed white chicken meat, (containing antibiotics and growth hormones) held together by stabilizers, breaded, fried, then frozen. Contains twice as much fat per ounce as a hamburger.
Fries = Russet Burbank potato sliced, fried, frozen, added artificial flavor, (derived from animal products?) added sugar, added salt. Fried in pure vegetable oil.
Strawberry milkshake = pasterized milk, (containing antibiotics and growth hormones) artificial strawberry flavor ( containing amyl acetate, amyl butyrate, amyl valerate, anethol, anisyl formate, benzyl acetate, benzyl isobutyrate, butyric acid, cinnamyl isobutyrate, cinnamyl valerate, cognac essential oil, diacetyl, dipropyl ketone, ethyl amylketone, ethyl butyrate, ethyl cinnamate, ethyl heptanoate, ethyl heptylate, ethyl lactate, ethyl methylphenylglycidate, ethyl nitrate, ethyl propionate, ethyl valerate, heliotropin, hydroxyphenyl-2-butanone (10% solution in alcohol) x-ionone, isobutyl butyrate, lemon essential oil, maltol, 4-methylacetophenone, methyl anthranilate, methyl benzoate, methyl cinnamate, methyl heptine carbonate, methyl naphthyl ketone, methyl salicylate, mint essential oil, neroli essential oil, nerolin, neryl isobutyrate, orris butter, phenethyl alcohol, rose, rum ether, y-undecalactone, vanillin, and solvent)
Cheese burger = ground beef (containing anabolic steroids, antibiotics, in a USDA study 78.6% of ground beef contained microbes that are spread primarily by fecal material)
Cola = This soft drink usually contains the following components: phosphoric acid, caffeine, sugar or aspartame or saccharin, caramel coloring, carbon dioxide, and aluminum. Caffeine acts by blocking adenosine (neurotransmitter) receptor sites in the central nervous system. Sugar A 12-ounce can of soda contains about 33 grams (11 teaspoons) of sugar. The ingestion of sugar actually increases urinary excretion of calcium, magnesium, chromium, copper, zinc, and sodium by impairing re-absorption in the kidneys. The loss of calcium in the blood activates the parathyroid hormone (PTH), which causes the release of calcium from the bones—more sugar starts the cycling that is at the root of osteoporosis, arthritis, bursitis, and gout. Sugar causes blood sugar levels to soar—insulin, secreted from the pancreas, shoots up to drive the sugar down—and rapid, unbalanced cycling ensues that eventually wears out the pancreas and makes the cells resistant to insulin—resulting in a disease called diabetes. It’s bad enough that fast/junk food conglomerates are creating toxic foods aimed at our children for profit. But eating fast food supports an industry that is extremely cruel to animals, is destroying family run farms and is highly toxic to our planet.
“Some corporate poultry farms crowd a million beakless chickens in cramped dark cages, soaking up antibodies and laying their guts out for the duration of their miserable lives…
Corporate farming is destroying family farms. According to Sierra magazine, billionaire chicken barons and billionaire hog tycoons have used their market power to drive a million family farmers out of business, including virtually every independent egg-and-broiler farmer in America. Each corporate farm puts 10 family farmers out of business.
Massive political contributions by billionaire agriculture barons allow them to evade laws that prohibit other Americans from polluting our waterways. Agricultural run-offs now account for more than half of America’s water pollution..” (http://www.earthpledge.org)
“We don’t eat junk food. So why is my kid hyperactive?”
What is junk food? Most of us consider fast food to be junk – and it is. But increasingly scientific research is pointing to all highly processed, refined and sugary foods as potentially mood altering.
“My kids eat what I used to eat and it never harmed me.”
What we ate thirty years ago is very different to what our kids are eating today. Our favorite brands have changed – inside. What we used to eat might come in the same packaging, it might smell the same, it might look the same and it might even taste the same (maybe even better?) but there is one ENORMOUS difference.
There are more artificial chemicals, or/and more sugar, or/and more salt in most household brands than there were 30 years ago. And chemicals, sugar and salt radically alter the way our brains works. They can literally make us crazy. Take sugar for example.
Next week I will post research data that the big US Food Conglomerates don’t want you to know. To be continued: THE SUGAR COATED COVER UP STORY
